Yuehe Historic District

Yuehe is a tributary of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. According to the "Gazetteer of Jiaxing Prefecture" from the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the river encircles the city and is named "Yuehe" (Moon River) due to its crescent-like curve. Yuehe Ancient Town, located in the urban area of Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, is the most intact, largest, and best-preserved area that reflects the residential and cultural characteristics of the water towns in the Jiangnan region. Covering a total area of about 90,000 square meters, Yuehe Old Street is home to a significant collection of late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China architecture. The unique spatial layout of the area is formed by the convergence of three rivers—the Grand Canal, Outer Yuehe, and Xiushuidou River—and three streets—Zhongji Road, Tannong, and Xiushuidou Street. This area is noted for its comprehensive preservation of the historical look and scale, making it the best representation of the urban residential and cultural features of Jiangnan water towns in Jiaxing City.
